Interfaces and Compatibility
Today, it is possible to
print directly from a camera phone to a home printer without the use of
a computer. The most common direct printing methods available include
PictBridge (via USB cable), Bluetooth (10m/30ft wireless range) and
memory cards.
The PictBridge printing
cable is often shipped in the box with your camera phone. It is usually
the same USB cable that serves other purposes like home computer
synchronization. PictBridge capability is often indicated with a
PictBridge logo on products or in other product information in stores,
or on the manufacturer's website.
Bluetooth* capability is
becoming common in camera phones, primarily for use with hands-free
headsets. Most phones with this wireless technology will send your
pictures directly to a printer. Check with your cellular service
provider to insure that the Bluetooth printing capability is enabled.
Bluetooth capability for printers is commonly offered via an optional
adapter by printer manufacturers, and is sometimes built directly into
the printer. Bluetooth capability is often indicated by name, with a
Bluetooth logo on products, or in product information in stores or on
the manufacturer's website. Look for the Bluetooth* logo for assurance
that the product features Bluetooth printing.
Camera phone memory cards
are becoming more common and easier to remove. Many photo printers now
feature built-in slots for these memory cards. Often smaller than the
memory card used in a digital still camera, a camera phone memory card
typically requires an adapter for insertion into a printer.
Test the printing
capability, or check for compatibility information on the phone camera
and printer manufacturer's product packaging and website before
purchasing. Look for "Mobile Printing Ready" in product information.
This is an indicator that the product was designed with the mobile
camera phone printing capability. The featured printing methods should
be indicated in parenthesis following the words "Mobile Printing Ready".
Print Quality
For best print quality,
only use the original ink and paper recommended by the printer
manufacturer. Check the manufacturer's website for recommendations on
printer models and ink/paper combinations. Most manufacturers provide a
guide on ink and paper for various print projects on their websites.
Watch for information such as "time to dry", "color fastness", and
"print longevity".
It is best to view the
print quality of both the phone and printer before purchase. Some
retailers offer in-store demos, or have print samples for your
evaluation. This is often the best way for you to judge the quality of
the products you are purchasing.
